It’s Sinter Klaas day today and maybe it’s pure serendipity that not only do I have my parents in town with me, but very very tiny ice cubes also started falling from the sky that melted into the ground since early morning.
This was the first of such a sight for me. Really mesmerizing. All the more heartwarming it felt, as I sip on hot tea and munch on cheese croissant by the window sill, watching nature work its charms.
At night, we didn’t have a plan on what to eat, so just letting nature take its course, we stumbled into a (I suppose) really Dutch place. And there, I (or, we) had our first Dutchie meal – Stamppot!
Thank you Sinter Klaas 🙂

Out of spontaneous curiosity, I made “Appeltje Eitje” for breakfast today.
This is inspired by a Dutch phrase that my classmates taught me — “Appeltje Eitje”. I found it a really cute sounding phrase that I believe just by saying it, I can feel cheerful the whole day!
Anyway, it refers to “apple egg” and means “easy, not a lot of effort required”.
I wanted to know how they taste like together, in the spirit of simplicity. So this was what I did:
1. Beat an egg in a bowl.
2. Slice half a red apple into cubes. (the other half was kept fresh in case the experiment fails :))
3. Heat some olive oil on a pan on small heat.
4. Pour the egg mixture on the pan and scramble it.
5. Throw the apple cubes onto the pan, scramble everything together until, well, the egg is well-scrambled.
6. Serve Appeltje Eitje on a plate.
The Result
The scrambled egg was wonderful, and the apple juicy and sweet, but ~ I felt the link between them is missing. I’ll have to try something different the next time (suggestions are welcome!).
Nevertheless, it was certainly quite an out-of-the-world breakfast to have! Healthy and all 😉
